One of my all time favorite TV shows is a little sci fi series called Firefly. My favorite character is a young girl named Kaylee who serves as the mechanic on the space ship. In 2005 Jewel Staite, who played Kaylee in both the series and movie (Serenity, which came out in the fall of 2005) was one of the headline guests at I-Con on Long Island. Well, of course I had to go! I didn’t have time to make a costume in the middle of my high school senior spring semester, but my mom offered and she made me a shirt and helped me find a jumpsuit that we dyed so that I could dress as Kaylee. When I-Con rolled around she and I hopped a ferry across the Long Island Sound to Stonybrook and there I met Jewel. She is such a sweet young woman and gave me some of the most cherished acting advice I’ve gotten: Don’t quit. I hope some day we might meet again, but in a more professional setting perhaps?
